O diagnóstico de artrite reumatóide deve ser precoce. Baseia-se em sintomas clínicos e em análises ao sangue. Podem ser necessárias radiografias, ressonância magnética, ecografia e cintigrafia óssea, bem como retirar líquido da articulação para análise.

A artrite reumatóide pode ser mais ou menos incapacitante e geralmente alterna períodos de crise com períodos de estabilidade. A taxa de mortalidade é ligeiramente aumentada nestes doentes.
